Curriculum Development & Assessment – Programme Intent

The intention of the Curriculum Development & Assessment strand is to ensure that all teaching staff – including Foreign-Trained Teachers (FTTs), Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs), and Heads of Department (HODs) – are equipped to design, deliver, and evaluate a curriculum that is coherent, inclusive, and aligned to national standards, while using assessment effectively to drive pupil progress.
This programme aims to:
- Build Curriculum Expertise – Develop the skills to plan and sequence learning so that knowledge and skills are progressively built over time.
- Ensure Alignment and Consistency – Map subject content and assessment points to the national curriculum, examination specifications, and whole-school priorities.
- Promote Inclusivity and Accessibility – Embed strategies that support all learners, including those with SEND, EAL, and disadvantaged backgrounds.
- Strengthen Assessment Literacy – Use both formative and summative assessment effectively to inform teaching, close gaps, and raise attainment.
- Enable Evidence-Based Decision Making – Apply assessment data to refine teaching approaches and curriculum planning at classroom, department, and whole-school level.
By the end of this strand, participants will confidently design and adapt curricula that meet statutory requirements and respond to pupil needs, use assessment not only to measure learning but to shape it so that all pupils make strong and sustained progress, demonstrate the ability to review and improve curriculum plans using evidence from data and pupil outcomes, and contribute to a culture of high expectations, academic rigour, and continuous improvement in curriculum and assessment practice.
